Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood. It is FDA-cleared for major depression and OCD, and many people consider it when medications have not worked well enough.
You might be a candidate for TMS if:
- You have depression, anxiety-related depression or OCD that has not improved after one or more medication trials.
- You have had side effects from antidepressants and want a non-drug option.
- You are looking for a treatment you can receive in-office while continuing your daily routine.
Who may not be a good fit
TMS may not be appropriate for people with certain implanted metal or medical devices near the head, or specific seizure risks. A psychiatric evaluation is the only way to know for sure.
Questions worth asking
- Is standard, accelerated or personalized TMS right for me?
- How many sessions will I need, and is it covered by my insurance?
- How will we measure whether it is working?
